Fishing was slow on Belew’s Creek Lake earlier this week when I got out for a few hours, but hunters are harvesting some big deer in the area. A family friend downed a huge 10 point buck using a bow and arrow, and another man killed a state record class buck, all within 10 miles of where we live in Walnut Cove. We see several deer eating acorns in our yard this time of year including a small buck but nothing like those deer.
This was also the week I’d considered doing some hiking on the Appalachain Trail but decided to back out for a number of reasons, primarily due to bear activity warnings for part of the area we were planning on hiking. Two friends hiked 18.5 miles in a day and a half but stopped early due to foot blisters and a rainy cold weather forecast. Bear warnings didn’t have any impact on their decision.
After two days of competition in the three day FLW Costa Championship on Kentucky Lake this week the lead was held by Chad Foster from Minnesota with over 33 pounds of bass. Day one leader Bryan Thrift from Shelby NC weighed in only two fish of a possible five the second day and fell to third place after leading by over 7 pounds on day one. Lots of anglers struggled to catch any fish but unfortunately I wasn’t one of them since I did not qualify for the championship this year.
Info on upcoming tournaments – none that I see scheduled in the next week or so.
Next week’s report – My grandson John II and I are planning to head to the coast for some surf fishing while he’s out of school for a couple of teacher workdays. We’ll either head out to Davis Island or to the Outer Banks if the small private ferry to Davis is booked up. I’ll have a coastal fishing report and the final result from the FLW Costa Championship.
Tip of the week – Declutter your home to reduce stress. Pull everything out of that “catch all” closet, cabinet, or drawer you’ve been wanting to go thru and either trash each item, keep it, or donate it. Not only might you find treasure from the ‘70’s, but you’ll enjoy memories stirred up by things from your past. The Japanese say that if you hold an object in your hand for a moment and it makes you smile keep it, otherwise let it go.
