Bass fishing was slow for me this week on Kerr Lake. A 3-pound bass bit a #6 crawfish colored Fat Free Shad crankbait as I retrieved it along the rocks at Nutbush Bridge on Thursday afternoon. Then on Friday I spent the day trying to locate bass in deeper water but only landed one small one, along with a bunch of white perch and a big freshwater drum. I’d heard through the grapevine that some nice bass were landed by anglers while jigging spoons in deep water.

At the end of the day Friday I was strongly considering skipping Saturday’s tournament and keeping the entry fee in my pocket. There didn’t seem to be much of a chance of doing well based on how fishing had been. Something that happened late in the day Friday changed my mind, and I’ll go into that more in next week’s column, especially if I do well.
Up on the Chesapeake Bay a few big striped bass were landed this week, including one by Randy Owen weighing 32.8 pounds. Another weighing over 50 pounds came to the scales, but the big ones haven’t really shown up yet. Mike Breedlove invited me to come spend a few days fishing with him and hopefully it’ll be good fishing when I get there. The plan is to fish Thursday through Sunday, weather permitting. The big cooler will be with me in hopes of bringing home a load of filets.
Info on upcoming tournaments — none I see scheduled. Things are slowing down for winter and will pick up again in February.
Next week’s report — results from the CATT Kerr Division bass tournament season final plus a striper fishing and seafood eating report from the Chesapeake Bay.
Tip of the week – Try a KVD 1.0 in the sexy chartreuse color pattern around shallow rocks near deep water.
