OXFORD — A rough start to the 2021 season for Oxford Prep continued on Tuesday afternoon, as the Griffins softball team fell to Voyager Academy in lopsided fashion by a score of 23-5.
“Our pitcher is hurt, so I have a shortstop and my third baseman pitching,” head coach Tommy Anstead said. “Neither one of them have pitched before, so hopefully our pitcher will be back before too long, but right now this is just one of those things we have to deal with.”
Although Oxford Prep surrendered five runs in the first inning, the Griffins countered by tallying three of their own and remained in striking distance of taking the lead as they and Voyager Academy entered the third inning. But disaster struck Oxford Prep in the third, with Voyager Academy tallying nine more runs to effectively put the game out of reach. Oxford Prep scored two more runs through the rest of the game.
Anstead admitted that his team is currently in a precarious position without a reliable No. 1 option on the mound, but he said his players’ determination was on full display against Voyager Academy despite the circumstances.
“The girls didn’t quit,” Anstead said. “They kept playing even though they were getting beat pretty bad. I thought the outfield looked decent today and that’s usually been one of our weak points. We’re just going to keep playing until our pitcher gets back.”
Oxford Prep will host East Wake Academy later today at 5 p.m. as the Griffins try to get their first win of the season.
