ROCKY MOUNT — Winnifred “Winnie” Adcock Raper, age 78, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh surrounded by her family. Born in Vance County, North Carolina, on Oct. 28, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Wilton Lee Adcock and Louise Poythress Adcock. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William “Bill” Adcock; and her sister, Dorothy “Dot” Renn.
Winnie was raised in Vance County and was the youngest of the four children. She looked up to her three older siblings, Bill, Carl and Dot. Growing up she was always full of energy and life. She spent her childhood roaming their family-owned dairy farm where her main job was to swat the flies off cows.
Winnie’s commitment to her family was never-ending. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved spending time with her family, and cherished their yearly summer trip to Ocean Isle Beach. She used her love of cooking every holiday and was always in the kitchen to lend a helping hand.
Winnie was well known for her baby blankets and children’s aprons that she made for everyone she knew, and those aprons helped many children form a love of sharing time with their parents in the kitchen. She enjoyed playing cards with her card group and was active in her book club. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, where she was active in the Meals on Wheels program, playing in the handbells choir, and serving on various committees.
