HENDERSON — Two women died in a weekend traffic accident that happened at the intersection of U.S. 401 and Vicksboro Road, a N.C. Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The crash claimed the lives of Armila Elcano Watkins, 68, who was from Henderson, and Maria Gina-Hallado Hackney, 58, who was from Oxford, Highway Patrol First Sgt. Chris Knox said.

Knox said the two-car accident happened at about 11:21 a.m. on Oct. 3, this past Sunday.

Watkins, with Hackney as a passenger, was driving west on Vicksboro Road and stopped at the intersection with U.S. 401.

She attempted to pass through the intersection to continue onward on Vicksboro Road, but a vehicle that was traveling south on U.S. 401 struck hers, Knox said. The two vehicles came to rest on the shoulder of U.S. 401.

No one in the second vehicle was injured and no one was charged with a traffic violation in connection with the accident, Knox said.

There is no light at the intersection, only a set of stop signs that gives drivers on U.S. 401 priority for its use. The accident scene is in the southwest corner of Warren County, about 10 miles from both Henderson and Warrenton.
