HENDERSON — Four people have died on the roads of Vance County in a pair of vehicle accidents in the past few days, the N.C. State Highway Patrol reports.

The first of the fatal accidents happened on Vicksboro Road near Southerland Mill Road on Saturday at about 10:30 or 11 a.m., troopers said.

The second happened Wednesday at about 3 a.m. or 3:30 a.m. on N.C. 39 North near Thomas Road in the Williamsboro area.

Trooper Michael Wilder, who is investigating both accidents, said the Vicksboro Road crash happened when a van crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The two occupants of the van were killed.

The pickup truck’s driver is recovering at Duke University Hospital in Durham, Wilder said, adding that he has been able to speak to the man.

Wilder added that the cause remains under investigation.

The N.C. 39 North accident involved a single vehicle that crossed the centerline of the highway and struck a tree. Three people were in the vehicle, and two of them died, Wilder said.

The investigation is ongoing, and while Wilder has his suspicions about the accident’s cause, the case is “still pretty fresh” and many details remain pending.
