WILLIAMSBORO — Vance County Sheriff’s Office deputies have made another arrest in connection with a fatal shooting that happened on Oct. 30 at Williamsboro’s main crossroads.

Sheriff Curtis Brame said deputies on Jan. 7 arrested Keron Small in connection with the shooting, which claimed the life of Devonte Cheek.

Small was held without bond at the Vance County Jail.

Authorities had previously arrested Tiara Zhane Seaward, 27, in connection with the case. Brame said the case remains under investigation, and that deputies continue to ask anyone with information about it to contact the sheriff’s office.

Cheek was shot and killed in what Brame has termed a confrontation that occurred in the parking lot of the Shell gas station at the corner of N.C. 39 and Thomas Road.

A second man was wounded in the incident.

Assault arrest

Brame on Wednesday also said that deputies had made an arrest in connection with what he called “a violent assault” on Dec. 30.

Roy Williams, of 2611 Spring Valley Road, Henderson, was held pending a $500,000 secured bond on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault on a law enforcement officer.

The arrest came after deputies responded to a call reporting a possible assault or stabbing.

A man met them at the door of the home on Spring Valley Road, and a deputy saw a woman laying on the kitchen floor “with an apparent traumatic injury,” Brame said.

The man resisted, assaulted the deputy and barricaded himself inside the home. The woman received medical aid and was taken to Maria Parham Health with “numerous injuries consistent with a violent assault.”

Shooting

A second incident on Dec. 30 brought deputies to a home at 1840 Satterwhite Point Road in Vance County, Brame said.

There, they found a man who was “suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to various areas of the body,” the sheriff said.

Authorities believe another man forced his way into the home and shot the victim before fleeing.

So far, authorities haven’t made an arrest. The case remains under investigation.
