Community Day

More than 200 people attended the Aug. 7 Community Day hosted by Turning Point Community Development Corp. and Oasis of Hope Ministries.

HENDERSON — On Saturday, Aug. 7, Turning Point Community Development Corp. and Oasis of Hope Ministries hosted a Community Day event.

Community Day is an annual event held on the first Saturday in August to encourage community support and give members a chance to find out about different resources offered by local organizations.

This year’s event had more than 200 people in attendance and featured community vendors, free haircuts, a backpack and school supply giveaway, free vaccinations and COVID-19 testing, live entertainment, STEAM activities on the Creating Success Mobile Learning Lab, and food trucks.

A total of 120 backpacks filled with approximately 1,032 school supplies were distributed, and 11 haircuts were provided to school-aged boys. All backpack recipients were also provided with a dental kit sponsored by Henderson Pediatric Dentistry with a toothbrush, floss and toothpaste.

Vendors in attendance included Granville-Vance Public Health, the Autism Society of N.C., Vance County Cooperative Extension, Vance County Girl Scouts, the Kerr-Tarr Agency on Aging, Perry Memorial Library, Wellness on Wheels Mobile Medical Clinic, Vance County Safe Kids, Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks, Vance County Fire Department, and Vance Granville Community College.

Food was available from Lawrence & Perry Barbeque and Lewis Express Ice Cream Truck. Entertainment included the Oasis of Hope Ministries Praise Team and Dance Ministry, comedy by Annie Perry, Ministry of Music by Larry Yancey, and DJ Reece.
