Open house

Guests flooded into the open house on Monday of Vance County’s Head Start program, which has moved to the former Eaton-Johnson Middle School complex on Beckford Drive next to the former Henderson Institute. Dr. Abdul Rasheed (back, right), Head Start’s chief executive officer, looks on.

HENDERSON — Vance County’s Head Start program moved its headquarters to a location on “sacred ground,” as Chief Executive Officer Abdul Rasheed put it, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a bustling open house.

The affair took place at the Vance County Department of Social Services at 500 N. Beckford Drive, which now houses the kindergarten program in one of its now formerly vacant sections. It was once the site of Henderson Institute. Rasheed was a student back in the 1960s before he transferred to Henderson High School.
