Granville County will soon be observing its 275th anniversary. Established in 1746, the county we call home was formed 30 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

To make this an anniversary to remember, a 275th anniversary committee has been formed to plan the 2021 observance. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, all events and gatherings are currently on hold. In the meantime, residents can participate in the celebration by reserving copies of a commemorative coffee-table-style book, as well as purchasing a souvenir anniversary coin, which will soon be available to the public.

The book, authored by Granville County’s own Lewis Bowling, will include photos not yet seen by the public and will be published by the anniversary date of July 2021. Those who pre-order the book by Dec. 31 can save $5 off the purchase price of $49.95. Reservations are now being taken online at the Granville County Government website at www.granvillecounty.org or by calling Patrice Willkerson of the County Manager’s Office, 919-603-1308.

The heavyweight anniversary coin will feature the 275th anniversary logo on the front and an engraved image of our familiar courthouse on the back. These will soon be available for only $5 each from any committee member, as well as through the County Manager’s office at 141 Williamsboro St. in Oxford.

The planning committee is made up of county representatives as well as volunteers from each of our municipalities. Committee members include Helen Amis (Oxford), Janet Parrot (Stovall), Dave Pavlus (Stem), Emily Champion (Butner) and Toni Anne Wheeler (Creedmoor). County Commissioners David Smith and Zelodis Jay, Mark Pace of the Thornton Library, Angela Allen of Granville County Tourism, Stephanie May of the Granville County Museum, and Patrice Wilkerson and Lynn Allred, representing County Administration round out the committee. Please see any of these committee members for additional information about the upcoming anniversary celebration.

Be looking for additional news and information as 2021 approaches, and remember that these keepsake items will make great gifts for the holidays!

Thank you in advance for your support!
