A middle school transition expo for rising sixth graders in Vance County will take place Thursday, from 6-8 p.m., at Henderson Middle School.

Both students and parents are invited to the event which will feature at least four different session that parents and students can rotate through.

In written comments, Terry Hedrick, public information officer for Vance County Schools described the event.

“Both of our middle schools and the STEM program are publicizing this to their parents and students,” Hedrick said. “We expect a big turnout, larger than the turnout last year at Eaton Johnson.

“The session will offer parents and students information about what to expect as they move into sixth grade at the much larger middle schools,” she said.

Hedrick also stated students will be informed on what their typical middle school day will be like, academic requirements and highlights, extra-curricular opportunities at their new middle school, and other information including issues like bullying, anger management, getting along with others, and even information about bus transportation and school meals.

Teachers and school administrators from  both middle schools and the STEM program will be on hand to lead sessions and share information at booths.

According to Hedrick several local providers, such as Area Mental Health, social workers and others will be represented.

No registration is required.
