Raiders pounded by Roanoke Rapids
Southern Vance coach Tony McGhee said Wednesday’s 16-0, five-inning loss to Roanoke Rapids was the worst his 2-2 Raider team has played in the young season.
But the Yellow Jackets didn’t make it easy either, piling up 11 hits behind starting right-hander Braxton Warren, who allowed three hits in four innings of work.
“They hit and they hit and they hit some more,” said McGhee. “They were just on it today. That’s what baseball is. We’re 2-2, so I’m pleased with that. I hate we lost the way we did.”
Aron Crumb led off the game with a base knock for Roanoke Rapids before Carson Arthur drew a walk. Then UNC-Wilmington recruit Clay Lockamon blasted a three-run shot over the right-center field fence.
It was that kind of day for Southern.
Roanoke Rapids tacked on seven runs in the second inning and six in the third.
Five Raider errors yielded Yellow Jacket baserunners.
“We’ve got to play better in these situations,” said McGhee. “But it’s early. It’s not a whole lot I can see when they’re just pounding everything they hit.”
The southpaw Crumb relieved Warren for the fifth, striking out two Raiders. Warren fanned one batter.
“We hit it and they made the plays,” McGhee said of Warren’s performance. “He did what he had to do. He wasn’t overpowering.”
Wes Collier got the start for Southern, working an inning before Kyle Lawrence went two. Dustin Brummitt sat down the Jacket side in order in the fourth and sophomore Cody Long didn’t allow a base hit in the fifth.
“It wasn’t against their subs either,” McGhee said of Long. “He did well.”
Southern previously posted a 4-2 win over Franklinton and a 3-2 victory over Southern Durham. Collier and Brandon Salmon were the winning pitchers in those contests. The other loss came against South Granville.
