Successful regionals for Northern swimmers
The Northern Vance swim team competed Tuesday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A East Regional.
No swimmers advanced to the state championships, but the Vikings recorded several team and personal bests in the competitive Cary meet.
Chapel Hill claimed regional titles in both the boys and girls competitions, besting second-place Big Eight Conference rival Cardinal Gibbons in each competition. Chapel Hill and Gibbons have combined to win 10 state titles since 2006 and the Gibbons boys have won six consecutive.
“It was a great experience and we learned a lot competing at such a high level for the sport of swimming,” Northern Vance coach Natasha Rubin wrote in an email to The Dispatch. “The swimmers went out there and swam with all they had. I was really proud of this team that I had the honor of coaching this year. With three seniors leading and six freshmen learning, I look forward to many more regional experiences in the future.”
Northern’s boys and girls teams each swam in three relays with the girls recording team bests in the 200 and 400 freestyle races.
Individually, Madison Bobbitt placed 23rd in the 200 free and Stanton Parham and Dakota Parrish each competed in the 200 individual medley.
Sarah Hull had all best times in her relay races, Megan Andrews had a best time in the butterfly and Holly Hilliard had a best time in the 50 free.
The 200 boys medley team won its heat, dropped three seconds and nearly broke a school record. The 200 free squad had a season-best time and the 400 free relay team placed second in its heat with each member dropping multiple seconds off their times.
