Down two of its top players, Northern Vance faced an uphill battle Wednesday against Cardinal Gibbons, the second-place team in the 3-A Big Eight Conference.

Northern got behind early, trailing 46-8 at halftime before the visitors claimed a 67-24 win.

The Vikings, who held Gibbosn to seven points in the third quarter, dropped to 3-9 in conference play.

“I’m very, very proud of my team,” said Northern head coach Randolph Crews. “That third quarter, we didn’t give up but seven points. And Cardinal Gibbons, did they back off a little bit? Sure they did. But they were still shooting 3s.”

Northern’s leading scorer and rebounder Jackie Miller was out with a concussion and point guard KyNyiah Landrum was out sick.

Gibbons forced 22 turnovers on the game and put the Vikings in an early hole.

“We couldn’t get the ball up the floor because now you’re asking our starting power forward Kenya Perry to get the ball up the floor,” said Crews.

Perry led the Vikings with 11 points.

Morgan Reid led Gibbons with 20 points, Stephanie Girard had 15 and Olivia Smith finished with 12.

“Morgan Reid has to be one of the better point guards I’ve seen,” Crews said of the Crusaders’ senior playmaker. “Her and Breona Jones at Southern.”

Northern lost 59-33 at Southern Durham on Tuesday. Miller led the Vikings with 11 points and freshman Kayleigh Spencer finished with 10.

Northern is back in action Friday at Chapel Hill.
