Prep Roundup: Raiders turn back Red Rams, 53-51
Southern Vance held off Franklinton 53-51 Tuesday led by 21 points and 17 rebounds from Ty-Traveon Roberts.
Franklinton went on a 24-9 run to tie the game with 2:30 left, but Southern scored six straight points to quell the rally.
Johnny Hawkins added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Raiders (7-9, 4-4 Northern Carolina Conference), who visit N.C. School of Science and Math Wednesday.
Southern still perfect in league play
Southern Vance completed a regular season sweep of Franklinton Tuesday with a 50-40 win.
The Lady Raiders improved to 14-2 overall and stayed perfect in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference with a mark of 8-0.
Breona Jones led Southern with 23 points and had five assists and five steals. Rashyda Burwell and Kechae Parker each added eight points.
The Raiders visit N.C. School of Science and Math Wednesday.
KVA girls go down at Grace
The Kerr-Vance varsity girls basketball team fell 37-33 on the road Tuesday at Grace Christian of Raleigh.
KVA was up 14-9 at halftime before foul trouble got the better of the Spartans, who dropped to 5-6 in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference and 11-8 overall. Grace finished 15-of-28 at the foul line.
Rachel Ross and Price Wester each had nine points for KVA and Macy Lee Johnson tallied eight.
KVA is in a tie for fourth place with Grace and battling for homecourt advantage in next week’s league tournament. The Spartans host St. David’s Friday for Senior Night.
