Prep Roundup: Southern downs Roanoke Rapids, 58-51
Ty-Traveon Roberts posted his 10th double-double of the season Monday and Southern Vance knocked off Roanoke Rapids 58-51.
Roberts finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds and converted a three-point play late in the fourth quarter to put Southern up for good.
The Raiders improved to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference.
Roanoke Rapids dropped to 3-4 in the league standings that are topped by Bunn (7-0). Warren County is 6-1 and Franklinton is 5-2.
Shawn Henderson added nine points and seven rebounds for Southern, which is scheduled to visit South Granville Wednesday and host Bunn Friday.
Lady Raiders still unbeaten in Northern Carolina
Southern Vance improved to 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference Monday with a 70-22 win over Roanoke Rapids.
Kechae Parker led the Raiders with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Breona Jones finished with 12 points and five assists. Carrington Matias and Rashyda Burwell each had nine points and Kiyanna Kearney had six points and 14 rebounds.
Southern is scheduled to visit South Granville Wednesday and host Bunn Friday.
Hunt’s 34 lead Spartans by Parrott
Kerr-Vance never trailed Monday at Parrott Academy, bringing a 66-60 Eastern Plains Independent Conference win back to Henderson.
R.J. Hunt scored 34 points to the lead Spartans and Derrian Markham had 13 as the visitors snapped a five-game losing streak. Freshman Drew Griggs scored seven points in the fourth quarter and came up with some great defensive stops, coach Dave Carrier said.
The win moved KVA (9-9, 3-6) to within a game of Parrott in the league standings.
The Spartans fell 61-52 Friday to Rocky Mount Academy.
KVA was outscored 23-4 in the fourth quarter and held without a field goal after leading 48-38 entering the final period.
Hunt led KVA with 26 points and Derrian Markham had 18.
The Spartans are scheduled to host non-conference opponent Ridgecroft Wednesday before visiting Faith Christian on Friday.
KVA middle school girls fall to South Wake
The Kerr-Vance middle school girls basketball team lost 31-16 Monday to the South Wake Sabres home-school team.
Holly Steg scored five points to lead the Spartans, who dropped to 9-2 overall.
KVA is scheduled to visit Ravenscroft Wednesday.
