Four qualify for wrestling state championships
Southern Vance’s Xavier Gregory and Moses Richardson, Northern Vance’s Travis Heath and J.F. Webb’s Omari Powell each qualified for the 3-A wrestling state championships, which begin Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Gregory won Saturday’s 195-pound Mideast Regional, defeating Johnte White of Fayetteville Westover in the final. Gregory is 39-2 on the season.
By finishing in the top four, Richardson, Heath and Powell each earned spots in Greensboro.
Richardson, now 30-3 on the season, lost to Orange’s Collin Smith in overtime of the 126-pound final.
Heath lost 5-2 to Orange’s Jared Flynn in the 120-pound consolation final and Powell was pinned by Union Pines’ Ian Burch at 160 pounds.
All four of the local wrestlers are seniors.
Southern finished seventh overall in the regional that was easily claimed by Orange. Northern was 15th and Webb took 20th out of 21 schools.
