Eagles escape Southern Vance, 58-56
Southern Vance outscored Warren County 21-12 in the fourth quarter Friday night, but the Eagles held on for a 58-56 win.
Southern tied the game at 56 with 23.5 seconds left on a Markel Hawkins free throw, but Charlie Williams drove right down the left side of the floor for Warren County and converted a layup with 14 ticks left.
The Raiders missed twice on their last possession. The Eagles’ Tyler Thompson was fouled with 0.3 seconds left. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Southern didn’t get a shot off.
Williams had a game-high 24 points for Warren County, including four 3-pointers. He had 11 points in the third quarter alone.
Andrew Alston had a big game down low for the Eagles, netting 14, 12 of which came in the first half.
Dequante Hinton also had four 3s for Southern, including one that got the Raiders within one point with 1:01 left in the game.
Markel Hawkins matched Hinton’s point total with 12 off the bench for Southern. Ty-Traveon Roberts and Cameron Evans both had 11.
Warren County trailed 31-16 at halftime and 46-35 heading into the final period.
Hawkins scored eight of his 12 in the fourth to lead the Raiders’ comeback down the stretch.
