Prep Roundup: Northern plays Northwood to scoreless draw
Northern Vance and Northwood played to a scoreless draw Monday in the penultimate 3-A Big Eight Conference soccer match for each team.
The Vikings lost the first matchup against the third-place Chargers 5-2.
“It was a great result for us,” said Northern head coach Razvan Tegean. “The boys played well. It was one of their best games this season.”
Tegean said Thomas Knight played well in goal for the Vikings with a few “amazing” saves including one on a one-on-one in extra time.
Northern’s record is 4-13-3 overall and 1-9-2 in league play entering Wednesday’s season finale at home, a Senior Night matchup against rival J.F. Webb. The Vikings and Warriors tied at 1 in the previous meeting in Oxford.
KVA wins JV volleyball championship
Kerr-Vance’s junior varsity volleyball team won the Eastern Plains Independent Conference tourney title Saturday, posting wins over Rocky Mount Academy and St. David’s before a championship win over Grace Christian of Raleigh.
KVA won each match in straight sets.
The statistical leaders in the title game were Caroline Hoyle (10 digs), Kassidy Dickerson (seven aces) and Sophia Naradzay (14 digs, six kills).
Naradzay also had a combined 22 digs and four aces in the previous two matches along with four kills against RMA.
Kassidy Dickerson had seven digs, four kills and three aces against St. David’s and Ashley Dickerson had a combined 14 digs and seven kills against RMA and St. David’s as well as three aces against the Eagles.
Cameron Rogers added six digs and a pair of aces Thursday against St. David’s in the semifinals.
Spartans knocked out of varsity tourney
Kerr-Vance’s varsity volleyball team was swept out of the first round of the Eastern Plains Independent Conference tournament Thursday against St. David’s.
Leading the Spartans were Bryles Cutts (four digs, two kills), Rachel Ross (four assists, four aces, three digs) and Rebecca Ross (five digs, ace).
KVA begins state tourney play Tuesday at Statesville Christian.
