Southern pulls away from Louisburg, 54-50
Markel Hawkins, Ty-Traveon Roberts and Jamarcus Perry were each in double figures for Southern Vance in the Raiders’ 54-50 win over Louisburg Friday night.
Roberts and Perry both had 14 and Hawkins had 13 for Southern, which improved to 2-1. The Raiders also have a win over Franklinton and a loss to Warren County.
Southern pulled away down the stretch Friday, pushing its lead to nine points on three different occasions in the final two minutes of play before the visitors claimed the final five points in the last 30 seconds.
“Once we get these guys disciplined and play the way we want them to play, that’s when we can be real special,” said first-year Raider head coach Torrey Nowell.
The Raiders led 37-35 entering the final period, but the Warriors tied it up in the opening seconds and then took a 39-37 lead.
A 3-pointer from Perry gave Southern a 40-39 advantage with 6:45 to play.
Perry’s 14 came off the “bench” for the Raiders.
“I don’t really have starters this year,” said Nowell. “Our slogan is ‘next man up.’ Whoever has the hot hand is the guy we’re going with.”
Roberts had back-to-back put-backs inside to give Southern a 44-39 lead.
Hawkins then found Perry in transition off of a turnover for a left-handed layup plus the foul and free throw, capping a 10-0 run.
“We stress defense. We press guys and get offense off defense,” said Nowell. “We’ve been working on defense a lot in practice. That’s our main focus.”
Southern will meet the Warriors again Friday in Louisburg.
