Prep Roundup: Goal met for Northern soccer

May. 10, 2014 @ 11:11 PM

Northern Vance started its soccer season playing games shorthanded and head coach Razvan Tegean’s chief goal was just to play all of the games and finish the season.

The Vikings did that — and with a full side of players.

Northern ended a one-win campaign Friday with a 4-1 defeat to J.F. Webb on Senior Night at Vikings Stadium.

“I’m extremely proud of them. We played all of our games,” said Tegean. “Our players showed a lot of character by not putting down their weapons and fighting through the season until the end.”

Charlie Vaughn scored twice for Webb, which also concluded its season. Armani Grillo and Jennifer Campos scored the other goals for the Warriors.

Stephanie Garcia scored for the Vikings to tie the score in the first half before Webb took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

Garcia and Katherine Jarrell were honored for Senior Night.

Northern had five freshmen on the roster for the season.

“They got a lot of experience,” said Tegean. “They see the physical difference from middle school to high school. Maybe that will help them get ready for the next season. They have to start working on fitness much earlier. We’ve seen a lot of improvement through the season.”

Crossroads, KVA’s Burnette qualify for state tourney

The Crossroads Christian golf team qualified for the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association Class 1-A Tournament.

The tourney will be held Monday and Tuesday at Mid Pines in Pinehurst.

Joseph Burnette of Kerr-Vance qualified individually after earning honorable mention honors in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference.

Vikings finish season

The Northern Vance golf team concluded its season in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A Mideast Regional on Monday.

Jonathan Byrom led the Vikings with an 84 and Tommy Alicardi shot an 86.

Northern shot a 384 to finish 11th and out of the running for a state championships berth.
