Kerr-Vance’s varsity lacrosse team dropped its opening match of the season 9-4 on Monday to Northwood.

Colin Pegram shined for the Spartans in the loss with three goals with Sam Fuquay adding the fourth goal and Emil Bruce providing assists.

“I was pleased with the effort we gave,” said Spartans coach Scott Burnette. “Northwood had a game under their belt and that showed.”

Burnette highlighted the play of Pegram and Fuquay, along with that of John Carr, Drew Griggs and goalie Jordan Smith (18 saves).

Burnette said he hopes for improvement on ground balls when the Spartans, who lost several players from last season to graduation, return to action against Northern Vance on Wednesday.

“We got beat on the ground balls tonight,” Burnette said. “The outcome may have been different if we had won that aspect of the match.”

Gibbons takes golf scrimmage at Kerr Lake

Six 3-A Big Eight Conference teams gathered at Kerr Lake Country Club Monday for what amounted to a scrimmage. Orange and Cedar Ridge, still out of school due to the effects of the recent winter storm, did not attend.

Cardinal Gibbons won the nine-hole exhibition with a score of 158, followed by Chapel Hill (177), Northern Vance/Northwood (181), J.F. Webb (203), and Southern Durham (216).

Chuck Swoboda of Gibbons was the low medalist with a 38, edging out a 39 from Northern’s Tommy Alicardi.

Taylor Cook led Webb with a 42.
