Kiyanna Kearney and Megan Hight both hit home runs and Kaylan Hoyle got the win on Senior Night Tuesday as Southern Vance breezed by Cardinal Gibbons, 12-2, in six innings.

Southern broke it open with consecutive four-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Alicia Shearin led off the sixth with a single and came around to score the game-clinching run after three wild pitches from the Gibbons reliever.

“It took us a little while to get our heads in the game today but after a couple of innings, we started seeing the ball better and played well defensively,” said Raider coach Leann Harrell.

Southern improved to 6-2 in the 3-A Carolina Conference, having lost last time out to Orange, which stayed unbeaten at the top of the league.

Kearney’s two-run homer Tuesday was a line shot to left and gave Southern a 5-1 lead. Hight followed in the fifth with a two-run bomb to right.

“They’re powerful hitters,” said Harrell. “They’re at the top of the lineup for a reason.”

Hight finished 2-for-3 on the day. Bree Simmons led the Raiders with a 3-for-3 performance and Hoyle was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Hoyle, a senior, allowed five hits on the mound and struck out four batters.

“Kaylan has been a huge part of this program,” said Harrell. “She’s been a starter for three years. She has done very well offensively for us and of course coming up pitching for us the last couple of years. Her stepping up like that has been great.”

Harley Owen, who drew two walks and popped up to second base, rounds out the senior class. Harrell said Owen, her first four-year player, is a “special girl” to her. Owen played as a freshman in Harrell’s first season as head coach.

Southern is back in action today at Northern Vance. The Raiders scored a 24-3 win in the previous meeting with the Vikings.
