Raiders run over by Louisburg
Southern Vance just couldn’t get it going in Friday’s 36-20 loss to Louisburg.
Southern finally got on the scoreboard with 52 seconds to play in the first half, cutting the lead to 16-8, and that seemed to give the Raiders some momentum entering the halftime’s homecoming festivities.
But Louisburg (3-2) recovered an onside kick to start the second half, setting the tone for another lackluster quarter of play from the Raiders, who dropped to 2-3 on the season.
Southern’s rushing offense was held to 77 yards as Louisburg rolled up 331 yards on the ground led by 163 yards and three touchdowns from

running back Antonio Smith, who returned from a two-game suspension.
“He was a big addition,” said Southern head coach Lewis Young. “He made a really big difference. He just runs hard. He’s so shifty and makes it really hard to contain him.”
Smith left the game near the end of the third quarter and did not return.
Southern was down 36-14 before adding a touchdown with 2:52 to play in the game and the Warriors drove it to the Raiders’ 8 yard-line on their final possession before taking a knee to end the game.
Smith was one of four Louisburg players to rush for at least 80 yards.
Qualik Shearin was Southern’s leading rusher with 28 yards on nine carries. The Warriors’ defense met him in the backfield nearly every time he touched it.
“I thought he ran well,” said Young. “He just didn’t have the space and the blocking performance from the offensive line. Qualik runs hards all the time. He just didn’t have the time to get the yards.”
Southern lost two fumbles and quarterback Ty-Traveon Roberts had an interception in the second quarter that led to a Louisburg score, making it 16-0 after the two-point conversion.
Roberts, who finished 7-of-16 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown, had three snaps sail over his head.
“Communication,” said Young. “It’s the same thing we practice, the same thing we do every game. It was just off tonight.”
A trip to Greensboro Smith (2-3), of the 4-A All-Metro Conference, awaits Southern this week.
