Southern Vance is playing for a trip to the state volleyball semifinals Saturday at South Granville.

Three of Southern’s five losses came to South Granville (24-5), the top seed out of the Northern Carolina Conference. The Vikings won Thursday at No. 1 Elizabeth City Northeastern (16-3) in five sets.

Saturday's match in Creedmoor is set for 7 p.m.

The second-seeded Raiders (19-5) clinched the quarterfinals of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A playoffs Thursday with a 3-0 win over No. 3 Bunn (18-7).

Southern hasn’t lost a set in the first three rounds of play, posting sweeps of No. 3 Ayden-Grifton and No. 1 Farmville Central before the Bunn win.

Southern head coach April Abbott said she didn’t see the playoff run coming at the beginning of the season.

“Not until close to the end of the season had they pulled themselves together enough for me to say, ‘Hey, this is it,’” Abbott said following Thursday’s win.

In addition to the South Granville defeats, Southern’s lost in conference to Franklinton and Bunn.

No Northern Carolina Conference team has been able to defeat South Granville this season.

Bunn head coach Henry Jones thinks the Raiders have a shot.

“Everybody’s had a hard time with South Granville,” Jones said Thursday. “If anybody can beat them, it’s this group.”
