Raiders take down top seed, host Bunn Thursday
Southern Vance’s 3-0 volleyball win Tuesday at No. 1 Farmville Central (20-4) means the second-seeded Raiders will host No. 3 Bunn Thursday at 6 p.m. in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state playoffs.
Southern (18-5), following Saturday’s first-round sweep of No. 3 Ayden-Grifton, won a close first set against Farmville Central 25-23 before 25-17 and 25-20 wins.
The Raiders won two of their three Northern Carolina Conference matches with Bunn (18-6) this season. The Wildcats, who knocked out No. 1 South Lenoir (17-3) Tuesday, beat Southern in its first match of the season.
Bunn opened the playoffs with a sweep at No. 2 Currituck.
“They’re so excited,” Southern head coach April Abbott said of her team. “They’re even more excited it’s Bunn, somebody in our conference they’ve already met before and know what to expect.”
Abbott said the Raiders had some moments Tuesday where they lost their mental edge, but the Southern coach credited senior Kiyanna Kearney with making some hustle plays to motivate the team.
“I think her leadership, not vocally, but volleyball knowledge and skills, really helped pull the team along,” said Abbott.
Kearney finished with 13 kills and 12 digs, Brittany West had 12 kills and four aces and Megan Hight tallied four aces and had a hand in 12 blocks.
