Southern hangs on to upset South Granville, 22-14
The race for the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference championship just got a little more interesting.
Southern Vance’s defense came up with timely stops and turnovers Friday and the Raiders (3-5, 1-1) hung on for a 22-14 upset of South Granville (6-2, 1-1), ranked 10th in the latest Associated Press 2-A state high school football poll.
Southern’s Ty-Traveon Roberts and Sheldon Smith each had interceptions and Emmanuelle Simirl pounced on a Viking fumble with 9:05 to play in the fourth quarter that led to the Raiders’ third score, putting the home team up 22-7.
“We had a long talk with everybody in practice this week,” said Southern head coach Lewis Young. “And I talked with our leaders, our captains and let them know we had to refocus. I think they did a great job in believing in it.”
Down 22-7, South Granville’s Hunter Holliday scooped up Southern backup quarterback Jerry Throckmorton’s fumble around the Vikings’ 10-yard-line and ran it 61 yards to set up quarterback Matt McCutcheon’s 9-yard touchdown strike to C.J. Hurt. Kaleb Chamberlain’s point after narrowed Southern’s lead to 22-14 with 44 seconds to play.
But Chamberlain’s squib attempt on the ensuing kickoff was corralled by Southern’s Juwan Harris.
McCutcheon never got in a groove for the Vikings and finished 12-of-29 for 96 yards.
Southern limited South Granville running back Sean Bowman to 89 yards on eight carries after his school-record performance in last week’s win over Franklinton.
“They’re really athletic,” Hobgood said of Southern. “They stack the box. We had to be able to throw the ball some and we just — We threw good passes and we dropped them. We just have to get our passing game better so when we do need it, we have it.”
Southern’s starting quarterback, Roberts, was 5-of-16 for 83 yards and had two touchdown passes to his favorite target, receiver Shawn Henderson. Roberts added 99 yards on the ground.
The Raiders also welcomed running back Qualik Shearin back from a concussion. He ran for 57 yards on 22 carries.
