Kerr-Vance tennis downs Epiphany 6-3

Kerr-Vance Academy opened its tennis season with a 6-3 win Friday over conference opponent The Epiphany School on a hot afternoon in New Bern.

KVA’s singles winners were Betsy Murphy (1-6, 6-1, 10-7), Katie Steg (6-0, 6-0), Mary Mills (6-2, 6-2), and Holly Steg (6-1, 6-1).

Murphy and Mills won their doubles match 8-1 and Katie and Holly Steg won 8-3.

Spartans host cross country meet

Kerr-Vance opened its cross country season Friday with a home meet featuring Wilson Christian, East Wake Academy, Faith Christian, and Oxford Prep.

Wilson Christian won the girls competition with a perfect score of 15, meaning Wilson swept the top five places, and East Wake Academy was the top boys team with 24 points.

The East Wake Academy girls were second behind Wilson Christian with 47 points, followed by KVA with 58 points. Faith Christian and Oxford Prep didn’t have enough runners for a girls score.

Faith Christian was the only other boys team with five runners and finished with 31 points.

Addison Mabry was KVA’s top girls finisher, finishing seventh (23:41), followed by teammates Emma Pelfrey (28:45), Aubrey Thompson (34:21), Lorena Negron (35:31), and Maya Lopez (35:34).

Beau Nutter, the Spartans’ only boys competitor, finished in 26:58.
