Northern Vance opened its soccer season Monday with a 1-0 win at Northern Nash.

Freshman Whitt Daniel scored the lone goal on an assist from Joseph Sharpe at the 15:38 mark of a match that was suspended with about 25 minutes to play because of lightning.

Sharpe shook a defender and dribbled inside the penalty area before leaving a cross in front of goal for Daniel, a central midfielder.

“The game was pretty intense,” said Northern head coach Razvan Tegean. “Both teams played hard. I think the boys played well.”

Northern kicked off competition last weekend in a preseason jamboree at Granville Central. The Vikings earned a 1-1 draw against Research Triangle Park, defeated Granville Central 2-0 and lost 1-0 to Orange.

Irving Cheluca scored in the draw with an assist from Jonathan Byrom and Cheluca scored again against Granville Central on an assist from Sharpe. Daniel scored the other goal against the Panthers with fellow freshman Lehman Ford assisting.

Northern Vance returns to action Monday, hosting Kerr-Vance Academy before facing Northern Nash again Wednesday at Viking Stadium.
