Raiders tally 13 hits in 8-4 loss to Orange
Southern Vance coach Leann Harrell had the Orange game circled at the beginning of the season. She knew the Panthers would be in contention for a 3-A Carolina Conference championship along with the Raiders.
Southern racked up 13 hits on unbeaten Orange Tuesday, but Panther pitcher Kyrbee Cheek got out of most innings unscathed and errors cost the Raiders in an 8-4 loss.
“No way should they have beat us today. We lost this game ourselves,” said Harrell. “What we need to do now is leave it in the past and when we go there, we’ll get it there.”
The return trip to Hillsborough is scheduled for April 26. Southern dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in league play while Orange improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Orange scored five unearned runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead before Kaneisha Pettiford ripped a solo shot to lead off the third inning, making it 6-2.
Kiyanna Kearney got two back for Southern in the fourth on a two-run single to left field.
The Panthers added another score in the sixth before the Raiders loaded the bases on a two-out rally in the bottom half.
Kearney and Kaylan Hoyle both got on with hits before Brittany West reached first safely on a bunt.
Cleanup Megan Hight knocked one deep down the right field line but the Orange fielder got to it for the out to end the frame.
“She’s a great hitter,” said Harrell. “She’s in the four-spot for a reason. You just can’t expect these girls every time you need something for them to always show up. You hope they show up, but you can’t always expect it.”
Orange tacked on another run in the seventh to make it 8-4 and allowed only one Raider to reach base in the bottom of the last inning.
Hoyle went the distance for Southern, allowing 11 hits and striking out four. Cheek had seven strikeouts for Orange,
“I think Kaylan pitched very well today,” said Harrell. “We just made some costly errors at the beginning of the game that basically cost us the game.”
Southern steps out of conference for a road trip to Person today and visits Cardinal Gibbons on Friday.
