Football starts Friday for three area teams
Southern Vance and J.F. Webb each begin their 2013 football seasons Friday at home while Northern Vance visits Ravenscroft.
Warren County starts next week at home against Northern.
Each game Friday kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
Southern is competing in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A classification for the first time since the 2008 football season. The Raiders welcome Northeastern Conference power Elizabeth City Northeastern.
Raiders’ coach Lewis Young said his team is the underdog against a perennial state playoff team that finished second in its league last season before advancing to the third round of the postseason.
Northern has opened against Ravenscroft in every season since 2005. The Vikings finally got a win in 2012, but it was the only one they recorded all season.
Northern had a healthy 2013 preseason after injuries at key positions disrupted last year’s promising start.
Head coach Eric Watkins enters the season confident his Vikings can compete in the new 3-A Big Eight league.
Northern’s conference rival, Webb, opens at home tonight against county rival Granville Central.
Tony Midgette is making his debut as the Warriors’ head coach. And senior Beau Smith is making his debut at quarterback. Last year’s starting signal caller, Corey Evans, will be on the opposite sideline representing the Panthers.
