Prep Roundup: Warriors start baseball tourney with win
J.F. Webb, Granville Central and Raleigh Enloe each got wins Thursday to open the Webb Easter Tournament.
In the final game of the day, Webb defeated Southern Vance 10-3.
Northern Vance fell to Granville Central 4-0 and Enloe topped Roxboro Community School 14-11.
Friday, Webb faces Enloe at 4:30 p.m. before Roxboro Community School and Granville Central meet at 7 p.m.
Northern and Southern will play Friday at Granville Athletic Park with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
The start times for Saturday’s games at Webb are 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Matchups will be determined after today’s results.
Freshman Zack Keeton got the win against Southern for the Warriors, who nearly ended it early via the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth inning with an eight-run frame.
The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead before Webb leveled and took a 2-1 lead on an error in the fourth inning.
Northern and Granville Central took a scoreless tie into the top of the seventh before a Vikings’ error brought two runs across.
In his first appearance of the season, Granville Central freshman Steven Faulkner tossed a complete-game shutout while allowing five hits.
Vikings finish third in Pittsboro
Northern Vance posted a third-place finish Thursday in the second 3-A Big Eight Conference golf meet of the season at Chapel Ridge in Pittsboro.
Cardinal Gibbons again came out on top, with a 316, and was followed by Chapel Hill (364), Northern (371) and Northwood (373).
Jonathan Byrom led the Vikings with an 84.
Webb shot a 427 and was led by Taylor Cook’s 100. Freshman Connor Overby shot 105 for the Warriors.
Southern Durham hosts the next league meet Tuesday, April 8.
KVA notches middle school lacrosse win
The Kerr-Vance middle school lacrosse team defeated Granville County 15-2 Thursday in Oxford.
Scoring for the Spartans: Max Perry (five goals, assist), Gabriel Carr (three goals, assist), Raphael Negron (three goals), Justin Watts (two goals), Jack Cheever (goal, two assists), Richard Allen (goal, assist). Alex Hester and Drew Griggs each added assists for the Spartans.
Aaron Yancey and Kendall Strachan scored for Northern Granville.
“We had a great team effort,” said Spartans coach Scott Burnette. “We did a super job of finding the open man.
KVA is off next week for spring break.
