Northern, Webb open Big Eight golf play

Northern Vance and J.F. Webb opened 3-A Big Eight Conference golf play Monday at Chapel Hill Country Club.

Northern posted a fourth-place finish led by Tommy Alicardi’s 85. Jonathan Byrom shot an 86 for the Vikings and Jamie Vaughan 88.

Cardinal Gibbons won the meet with a 319, followed by Chapel Hill (361), Northwood (368), Northern Vance (376), Cedar Ridge (378), Southern Durham (426), Orange (437), and Webb (441).

Charles Swoboda of Gibbons was the low medalist with a 74.

Taylor Cook led Webb with a 100 and Warriors head coach John Hunt said he was pleased with the play of freshman Connor Overby, who shot a 107.

The next league meet is Thursday, hosted by Northwood.

Vikes visit one of state’s top teams

Northern Vance fell 14-0 Monday at Chapel Hill, the state’s 19th-ranked lacrosse team.

“Our defense did a rocking job on that field tonight,” said Northern coach Dan Whittacre. “We still have work to do. We’re a growing team and improving every time.”

The Vikings are scheduled to welcome the state’s top team, Cardinal Gibbons, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

KVA hosts EPIC meet

Kerr-Vance hosted an Eastern Plains Independent Conference golf meet Monday at Henderson Country Club.

Parrott Academy won the contest with a team score of 348, followed by Halifax Academy (388), Rocky Mount Academy (406), and KVA (419).

The low medalist was Holden Strickland of Halifax Academy with a 75.

KVA’s Joseph Burnette finished fourth with an 85 and A.J. Holloway had his best-ever round with a 99.

“I’ve seen steady improvement,” KVA head coach David Carrier said of his inexperienced group. “We’re just trying to get better every day.”

Spartans fall to Cary Christian

The Kerr-Vance tennis team was defeated 8-1 by Cary Christian last Thursday.

KVA (2-4, 0-2 EPIC) was back in action on Monday against Grace Christian of Raleigh.
