Raiders have been ‘waiting’ for this
Qualik Shearin ran for 190 yards and two scores, receiver Shawn Henderson caught a touchdown pass for the fifth consecutive game and Southern Vance won its third straight Friday against Roanoke Rapids (2-8, 0-4).
The 28-7 win keeps Southern (5-5, 3-1) in a tie for first place in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference with South Granville (8-2, 3-1) and either Bunn (5-4, 2-1) or Franklinton (7-2, 2-1).
The Bunn at Franklinton game Friday was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather and rescheduled for Monday.
“This is what we’ve been waiting for,” said Southern head coach Lewis Young. “We’re looking forward to having this chance to play for a conference championship.”
Only the top three teams in the league get automatic spots in the postseason. A win at Franklinton this week would assure Southern a share of the league title and a state playoff berth although the Raiders are in good position for an at-large playoff selection even with a loss.
A Franklinton win over Bunn Monday and a Southern victory over Franklinton Friday would give the Raiders an outright conference championship.
Southern’s defense is allowing an average of 11.6 points in the three-game win streak.
“Defensively our guys have just stepped up,” said Young. “They’re playing at a really high level.”
The Raiders, who honored 14 for Senior Night, held Roanoke Rapids to 115 yards of total offense and six total first downs. Two of those first downs were earned on penalties.
Southern had nine penalties for 80 yards and Roanoke Rapids had six for 40.
Roanoke Rapids cut a 14-0 lead in half with 9:26 to play in the third quarter, starting on a direct snap to halfback Cole Phelps, who scored from 3 yards out, two plays after Jerry Verrill’s 40-yard run down to the Raiders’ 9-yard-line.
Verrill’s run came on the Yellow Jacket’s first snap after forcing a turnover on downs when Southern quarterback Ty-Traveon Roberts’ 4th-and-1 sneak from the Raider 44 was denied.
Shearin put Southern up three scores with 6:46 to play in the game when he capped a 10-play, 94-yard drive with a short rushing touchdown. The senior also had a 52-yard run on third down earlier in the drive.
“He really performed well,” said Young. “He just made such good reads.”
Henderson caught a second quarter touchdown pass from Ty-Traveon Roberts and Henderson also added 90 rushing yards on two carries from the punter position. One run came on a fake punt and the other on an improvisation following a bad snap.
