‘Small-ball’ Spartan boys are 8-0

Kerr-Vance started its three-game week with a 59-38 win Monday over American Hebrew Academy of Greensboro.
The Spartans (8-0), who have won each of their games by at least 10 points, raced to a 42-17 halftime lead behind 11 points from Tyson Carrier and nine from R.J. Hunt. Carrier finished with 13 and Hunt had 11.
“Saw some good things out of all of our guys,” said KVA coach Dave Carrier. “Some guys got to play that haven’t got to play as many minutes as I would like. All in all, it was a good night.”
American Hebrew jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game, but KVA settled down and took over in the last few minutes of the opening frame, taking a 19-7 lead into the second period.
The Spartans finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run that grew to 21-1 by about midway through the second frame, capped by a Jake Ruggles layup, courtesy of a Troy Bickel assist. The play originated from an American Hebrew turnover, a theme for much of the first half.
“I don’t know that we’ll be successful every night, but we’re going to try every night,” Carrier said of the Spartans’ defensive pressure. “We’re going to get up and defend people, try to make it a full-court game. We’re kind of small — we’re going to play small ball. We have depth, so that’s our best way to use it.”
Tyson Carrier’s 13 came off the bench for the Spartans, who finished with 26 total bench points.
“We don’t really make a big deal out of starting,” said Dave Carrier. “It just depends day-to-day. A lot of its on matchups and stuff like that. (Tyson) has done well as all the guys have. Every night we have a different guy step up. That’s what makes us a good team.”
KVA visits St. Thomas More Academy Tuesday before hosting Calvary Baptist Friday. Calvary (6-2) is ranked No. 2 in 2-A by ncprivateschoolsports.com.
“Friday will be a huge challenge for us. It should be a fun night here,” Dave Carrier said.
