Lady Spartans grind out 35-18 win
Kerr-Vance weathered a late flurry of baskets from American Hebrew Academy Monday and pulled out a 35-18 win.
Down 26-9, the visiting Eagles scored the first nine points of the final period to get within eight. But the Spartans responded with a 9-0 run of their own to end the game.
“We’re starting to get to the point where we keep our composure,” said KVA coach Brian Russell. “We’re learning how to win as opposed to thinking about what’s going to go wrong next. We just kind of weather the little spurt.”
“It was a good win, a workmanlike kind of win,” added Russell. “Sometimes you need one like that.”
Rachel Ross led KVA with 11 points, including five down the stretch.
“She made huge free throws and she’s done that several times at the end of a game,” Russell said.
KVA held American Hebrew to no points in the first quarter and one in the third. The Spartans led 18-8 at halftime.
A 3-pointer from Rebecca Ross put KVA up 25-9 with 3:44 to go in the third before a Sophie Naradzay free throw closed the quarter.
“That was big, coming out and reestablishing control in the third quarter,” said Russell.
Russell credited Price Wester with strong play inside as of late. She finished with nine points Monday.
KVA visits St. Thomas More Academy Tuesday and hosts Calvary Baptist Friday.
