Soccer Roundup: Southern opens with 2-1 win at Webb
Before the season, first-year Southern Vance head coach Eric Faucette said maintaining possession would be vital to his team’s success.
The Raiders passed their first test Wednesday with a 2-1 win at J.F. Webb.
Southern’s attack was controlled and deliberate while the Warriors created most of their chances on counter attacks.
“I haven’t looked at the book yet, but I feel confident saying we possessed the ball at least 70 percent of the game,” Faucette said following the season opener. “My guys in the front, I knew they were going to get the job done; my guys in the back were rock solid; my guys in the middle, they’re going to make things happen.”
Southern’s Luis Amaya-Villa and Carlos Barajas, assisting each other, scored in the opening 10 minutes.
“They’re both sound players,” said Faucette. “I’m looking forward to the next game.”
Amauri Del Valle pulled one back for Webb on an assist from Taylor Currin in the 35th minute. Del Valle was one-on-one with Southern goalkeeper Jose Monroy and skirted the Raiders’ netminder before tapping in the finish from point blank range.
Currin and Del Valle each had breakaways late in the second half, but were denied by Monroy.
Ricky Givens, Webb’s athletic director, is serving as interim coach.
The Warriors dropped to 0-2 and started the season with a 9-0 loss to Franklinton.
“We’re real young right now,” said Givens. “We haven’t learned how to fight yet. We’re getting better.”
NORTHERN VANCE 2, NORTHERN NASH 1
Head coach Razvan Tegean has been involved with Northern Vance boys and girls soccer for eight years. For the first time in his tenure, the Vikings secured a season sweep over Northern Nash.
Northern Vance bested Northern Nash 2-1 Wednesday with goals from Jonathan Byrom and Joseph Sharpe.
The Vikings trailed 1-0 at halftime.
“It was a totally different second half,” said Tegean. “We played so much harder. We played together.”
Byrom’s goal was on a free kick from about 25 yards out and Sharpe scored on a penalty kick following a handball in the box.
Northern Vance (2-0-1) is scheduled to visit Southern Vance on Tuesday.
KERR-VANCE 4, WAYNE COUNTRY DAY 0
Kerr-Vance Academy defeated Wayne Country Day Tuesday 4-0 with two goals from Emil Bruce and one each from Jordan Hogge and Lorenzo Ortiz.
Ortiz assisted Hogge’s goal and Joseph Burnette and Juan Lopez set up Bruce’s scores.
Goalkeeper Jordan Smith recorded the clean sheet for the Spartans, who visited Ridgecroft on Thursday.
