Jones lifts Lady Raiders by Vikes
Breona Jones bounced back from a nasty first quarter spill to lead Southern Vance to a 52-39 win at Northern Vance Friday night.
Jones left the game with 2:23 to play in the first of quarter after falling and hitting her head on the floor. She sat out the remainder of the first half and the Raiders felt her absence.
Northern outscored Southern 15-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-20 lead into halftime.
Jones returned to start the second half, tying the game at 30 on a layup with 4:22 to play in the third quarter before nailing a 3-pointer.
Southern won the first meeting against Northern, 67-31.
“You could see a difference in the players,” Southern coach Amy Simpson said of Jones’ return. “They felt like kind of a relief of the pressure.”
“I was glad our team didn’t give up,” added Simpson. “Everybody knows Moesha Sneed stepped up huge offensively for us. That helped us out a lot.”
Jones led Southern with 15 points and Sneed added 14 off the bench with four 3-pointers.
“I like the fact that I get a chance to let her watch the game a little bit, kind of get used to it,” Simpson said of Sneed’s sixth-man role. “I wouldn’t trade her for anything. The role she has on the team has helped us a lot this year.”
The Raiders took a 38-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Northern coach Randolph Crews said his team was beaten to the 50-50 balls.
“The ball’s here and we’re at it and they’re at it and they beat us to the ball,” he said. “Had we got a couple more of those rebounds, it might have been a different game.”
Jazmine Haywood and Kechae Parker both had 14 points for Northern, which was outscored 32-15 in the second half.
“We just couldn’t get the ball to go into the rim,” said Crews. “When you’re pressuring in a big game like that and you’re not relaxing and playing your game, that rim can get real, real small. That’s what happened to us.”
Northern hosts J.F. Webb on Tuesday while Southern welcomes Chapel Hill to Raider Gymnasium. The Tigers are perfect in conference play and knocked off Southern, 65-46 last time out.
