Garrett nearing Catamounts' strikeout record
Former Southern Vance star Jordan Garrett left the Southern Conference Championships 12 strikeouts shy of Western Carolina’s all-time record.
The Catamount sophomore’s career strikeout total now stands at 370. Mendy McKenzie (2006-2007) currently holds the record for the Western Carolina program, which started in 2006.
Western Carolina (20-36) was eliminated Thursday in Greensboro at the Southern Conference tourney, falling to Samford and Georgia Southern in the double-elimination event.
The seventh-seeded Catamounts began the tourney with a 3-1 upset over second-seeded College of Charleston. Garrett struck out five to pick up her 13th win of the season.
Garrett also eclipsed Western Carolina’s previous single-season strikeout record of 210 set by McKenzie in 2006. Garrett finished the season with 223 strikeouts.
Garrett guided Southern Vance to the 2011 N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state championship series after an illustrious career as a Raider.
