Southern bounces back with 24-19 win at Cedar Ridge
Southern Vance rebounded from a Week 1 blowout loss to Elizabeth City Northeastern with a 24-19 win over Cedar Ridge (0-2) in Hillsborough Friday.
The Northeastern Eagles put a similar smashing on Northern Nash Friday, 45-0.
Sheldon Smith, known more for his defensive play, gave the Raiders the lead Friday on a run from about 6 yards out to make it 18-13 in the third quarter before Raider quarterback Ty-Traveon Roberts ran in for a 12-yard score.
“He was great,” Southern head coach Lewis Young said of Smith, also a linebacker. “He was just carrying people with him. He was a beast out there. He was an animal.”
Southern rallied from a 13-0 deficit and cut it to one point by halftime after a 40-yard run from Qualik Shearin and a 60-yard interception return for touchdown by Stanton Fields.
The Raiders were playing without top wide out Shawn Henderson as well as receiver DeAndre Jefferson.
“It was really big,” Young said of the win. “Without them, coming out and getting a win like this is really big for us.”
Southern is off next week and returns to action Sept. 13 at home against Northern Vance.
“That means so much to have that win behind you having that extra week off,” said Young. “Now we get a week off and a chance to work on the mistakes so we can get better, work on preparing for Northern Vance.”
