Raiders pick up first win against Northern
Southern Vance head coach April Abbott was victorious in her return Friday to Northern Vance, where she led the Vikings’ program from 2010-2011.
The Raiders won in a competitive match, 3-0 (25-14, 31-29, 25-22).
Abbott’s team wanted this one after an 0-2 start to the season.
“Their goal was just to come out and win,” said Abbott. “They’re tired of losing already. They’ve lost two games, so I know they were ready for a win.”
Brittany West and Kiyanna Kearney combined for 23 kills for Southern. West had 12 and Kearney had 11. West also added 12 digs and six aces and Kearney tallied 17 digs.
Abbott said the Raiders weren’t perfect, but did show improvement from losses against Bunn and South Granville.
“They gelled a little bit better today,” said Abbott. “Our biggest problem is starting strong and finishing strong. We have a lapse in the middle. Their goal today was to finish the same way they start.”
Megan Hight added seven blocks and four kills for Southern and Allyson Dunn had 18 digs.
Abbott said Mikayla Sellers is coming into her own in the middle.
“She has taken that role in the middle and kind of ran with it,” said Abbott. “I tell her to do something — she does it. She gets it done.”
Northern’s first-year head coach Christa Mosly got her introduction to the Vikings-Raiders rivalry.
“It was very intense,” said Mosly. “My team just had this big burst of fire today, which is something that hasn’t really sparked up until today. But I think they played well. I think both teams played well.”
Mosly was impressed with the performance of freshman Holly Hilliard.
“She’s the one that got us those touches on the balls, on those blocks when we needed them,” said Mosly. “She really stood out today.”
Mosly expects the confidence her team displayed Friday to carry into next week. The Vikings, which dropped to 2-2, visit Orange Tuesday in 3-A Big Eight Conference action.
Southern hosts Roanoke Rapids Tuesday in a 2-A Northern Carolina Conference matchup.
