Northern Vance lost to South Granville 51-27 in wrestling Tuesday.

Johnathan Norton, Jacob Orr, Travis Heath, Jamal Kearney, and Mykel Williams each had contested wins for the Vikings.

Norton’s came in an 8-1 decision at 106 pounds. Orr pinned Margel Sanchez 1:47 into their match at 120. Heath and Kearney also had pins at 126 and 138, respectively.

Williams pinned Chris Bunn in the second period of their 285-pound match.

Northern travels to Knightdale Jan. 19.

 

KVA boys come up short against RMA

The Kerr-Vance varsity boys basketball team was defeated 52-43 Tuesday by Rocky Mount Academy Wednesday ahead of Wednesday’s match at home against Fayetteville Academy, the fifth-ranked team in NCISAA 2-A.

The Spartans (11-2, 4-1) led at halftime and were up 34-29 after three quarters before the Eagles shot 13-of-16 at the free throw line to gain the edge in the final period.

“They really were a well-coached team,” said KVA coach Dave Carrier. “They never quit. They played with a lot of poise. We played hard, we had a tough time putting the ball in the basket tonight.”

R.J. Hunt led KVA with 14 points and Derrius Perry had 10.

Rachel Ross leads Lady Spartans in loss

Kerr-Vance fell 48-43 to Rocky Mount Academy in varsity girls basketball action Tuesday.

The Spartans were down 26-18 at halftime and were down 16 in the fourth quarter before trimming the Eagle lead to five.

“We played good in spurts. We didn’t play consistently good enough,” said KVA coach Brian Russell. “Rocky Mount played real well and they shot the ball well.”

Rachel Ross led the Spartans with 18 points and Jessica Darnell had eight.

Spartan middle school boys fall to RCS

The Kerr-Vance middle school boys basketball team lost 56-30 to Roxboro Community School Tuesday.

Drew Griggs led the Spartans with 12 points and John Ross Holland added seven.
