Warren County girls’ rally not enough against North Johnston

Warren County trailed North Johnston by 13 points entering the fourth quarter Tuesday before trimming the lead to one in the final minute of the game.

North Johnston point guard Chandler Hines responded by driving into the lane for a layup with 37 seconds left.

The Eagles couldn’t find an equalizer and lost 52-47.

Warren County coach Shannon Jones said she was pleased with her team’s effort in the fourth quarter. The Eagles are now 2-2 in 2-A Northern Carolina Conference play and visit Northwest Halifax Friday.

After Hines’ layup, Warren County’s Alexis French missed a runner in the paint. That put North Johnston’s Jamie Johnston at the free throw line, where she missed both shots with 24.2 seconds on the clock.

Whitley Fuller missed a 3-pointer for the Eagles and the Panthers sealed the game at the free throw line.

Warren County didn’t have an answer for Hines, who led her team with 19 points, including three 3-pointers.

North Johnston led 35-24 in the second quarter before Mikayla Hargrove got Warren County back in it with back-to-back 3s off the bench.

Jones said knocking down shots is exactly what she expects out of Hargrove.

But Hines was up to the challenge, nailing a step-back triple in transition before a lay-in via a turnover and a dish to Khadija Neal for a score to push the lead to 43-32. Dominique Solomon was strong inside for Warren County, tallying 19 points. She sank the basket that got the Eagles within a point in the fourth.

North Johnston led 29-18 at halftime.
