Southern ace tosses two-hitter, fans 14
Southern Vance followed a big 1-0 win against Bunn Monday with a 9-2 decision over Warren County Tuesday.
Southern’s sophomore ace, Brittany West, struck out 27 batters combined in those contests and the Raiders are likely playing their best softball of the season as they battle for a state playoff spot.
“She’s hitting her spots and she’s battling,” Southern head coach Leann Harrell said of West, who allowed two hits Tuesday.
Bunn was second in the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference behind South Granville entering play Tuesday.
Southern (7-8, 6-6) is vying with N.C. School of Science and Math for the league’s fourth and final automatic postseason bid. The Raiders and Unicorns are scheduled to play on Friday in the regular season finale for both squads.
The Raiders got behind 1-0 on Tuesday before rallying for a seven-run third inning.
“We were hitting the ball pretty well the first couple of innings,” said Harrell. “We just weren’t finding the holes.”
Megan Hight was 3-for-4 for Southern and Rashyda Burwell was 2-for-4. West, Kiyanna Kearney, Mikayla Sellers, Autumn Wortham, Ayeshia Teasley, and Kristen Dickerson each registered one hit.
“We’re still making too many errors,” said Harrell. “But we’re working through it, coming together as a team.”
Kearney, Hight, Burwell, Dickerson, and Sellers each were honored for Senior Night.
Kelsie Clary and Keara Avent recorded Warren County’s hits.
