Northern Vance opened 3-A Carolina Conference play Monday with a 5-0 win at crosstown rival Southern Vance.

Logan Brinker led Northern with two goals as the Vikings improved to 2-4-2 on the season.

“I think everybody played well,” said Northern coach Razvan Tegean. “We moved the ball a lot. We had good possession. We connected with each other and created some opportunities. They definitely listened to what I asked them to do and played some good quality soccer.”

Northern led 3-0 at halftime before Brinker scored twice in less than a minute. Stephanie Garcia assisted on the first and set up the second, crossing left to Ashlyn Reams before she knocked it ahead to Brinker, who buried the near-post finish.

“She was at the right place, right time,” said Tegean. “And that’s where the striker needs to be a lot of the time.”

First-year Southern coach Brandelyn Breinig was pleased with her team’s effort, especially considering the result the last time the teams met. Northern won 13-0 in the second meeting a season ago after claiming a 5-0 win in the first game.

The Raiders are still searching for their first win this season.

“It’s a whole different team than we started with,” said Breinig. “We’re improving a lot. There’s obviously some things we still need to focus on — finishing, shooting, being first to the ball — are some that come to mind. But I’m not unhappy with our performance today. I think we did really well.”

Southern goalkeeper MaryKey Mendoza stopped about 20 shots. Breinig also credited Kimbre Archer with solid defense in front of Mendoza.

Tanaua White had the clean sheet in goal for Northern, which opened the scoring on a Katherine Jarrell rebound of a Brinker shot.

The Vikings doubled the advantage in the 22nd minute on a Kristin Long penalty kick before Garcia eluded the Raider defense, dribbling in from about 30 yards out for a finish.

“She’s one of the constant players that we have this season,” Tegean said of Garcia. “She’s an important player on our team.”

Southern is away Wednesday at Chapel Hill while Northern visits Cardinal Gibbons next Monday.
