Warriors wrap up tourney on positive note

David Watson threw a complete game, his defense backed him up and J.F. Webb edged Roanoke Rapids 6-4 for fifth place Saturday at the Warriors’ Easter tournament.

Webb finished with one win and two losses at the tourney and improved its overall record to 4-8. The Warriors had only one error on the day.

“We just couldn’t get it together and today we finally strung it together,” said Webb coach Mike Carroll. “The simple things we asked them to do, they did today.”

Webb went ahead for good in the third inning and added three runs in the fourth, but Carroll was most pleased with the second inning.

With two outs, Lane Dickerson, Bryan Smith and Sammy Sizemore notched consecutive hits at the bottom of the order, each with only a strike to play with.

Sizemore scored Dickerson on a single to left to open the game’s scoring.

“They did exactly what we’ve asked them to do and battle,” Carroll said. “That’s what wins games. It very easily could have been walks back to the dugout.”

Webb’s three-run fourth was highlighted by Andrew Watson’s two-run double to the wall in right field. Chad Frazier made it 5-1 by roping a run-scoring single to right.

Roanoke Rapids got two back in the top of the sixth before the Warriors added another in the bottom half.

Cole Phelps knocked in Clay Lawrence to get the Jackets within two runs, but David Watson caught Kyle Vincent looking at a breaking ball to end the game.

David Watson allowed eight hits and struck out six.

Carroll said Watson could be Webb’s No. 1, but he’s called upon more for his defensive prowess behind the plate.

“He’s that kid that wants the ball,” said Carroll. “I went out and visited him that one time and he said, ‘Coach, I got this out.’ And the ball was hit right back to him and he got the out himself. That confidence — there’s no substitute for that.”

Webb returns to action Tuesday, April 9, hosting Chapel Hill.
