The Kerr-Vance varsity lacrosse team won convincingly at Northern Durham Monday, dominating from the opening faceoff on its way to a 16-5 win.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after the first quarter.

Darren Doyle scored off of an assist from Luke Pegram. Sam Fuquay scored on an assist from Hayes Griggs and Pegram added a goal unassisted.

Griggs then scored the first and second of his five goals for the game with the second off of an assist from Franklin Irvin.

The Spartans continued the scoring barrage in the second period with goals by Troy Bickel, John Robert Carr, Doyle and Griggs. Luke Pegram picked up two more assists and tallied five assists for the game. The Spartans went into the break with a 9-3 lead.

“We did a fantastic job of controlling ground balls and face-offs,” said KVA Coach Scott Burnette. “We did a good job of running the fast break and moving the ball in our set offense.”

The scoring slowed down in the third frame with Fuquay and Doyle netting goals, one off of another assist from Pegram. But the Spartans turned it up a notch higher in the last frame scoring five times.

Pegram, Irvin and Hunter Layton all scored with Griggs adding two more goals. Pegram, Irvin and Fuquay picked up assists for the 16-5 final.

Burnette credited a good defensive effort and excellent play in goal by Dallas Smith, who played his first-ever game in goal because Jordan Smith (no relation) was out of town on a family trip. “You’ve got to give Dallas credit for stepping into goal tonight,” Burnette said.

The Spartans return to action at home today against Cary Academy.
