Local Roundup: Northern nets first soccer win
Northern Vance earned its first win of the season Wednesday over Southern Nash, 2-1.
The victory avenged a 2-0 loss to the Firebirds earlier this season.
“It was a completely different game,” said Northern coach Razvan Tegean. “I told the girls if they can do it one night, they need to find a way to do it every night.”
Gabby Matthews netted the winner in the 70th minute on an assist from Logan Brinker.
Northern’s Stephanie Garcia opened the game’s scoring in the first half with an unassisted finish before Southern Nash tied it.
The Vikings visit Southern Durham Thursday.
KVA middle school lacrosse drops game to Cary Academy
The Kerr-Vance Mmiddle school lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the season against Cary Academy on Wednesday.
Drew Griggs and Chase Layton scored for the Spartans in the 7-2 loss.
“To be able to compete with Cary Academy with as little time as we’ve had in practice is very good,” said KVA coach Scott Burnette. “That was a really good team that we played. I was fired up about how we played against them.”
Cary Academy took a 1-0 halftime lead in a very competitive first half of play.
Burnette credited KVA goalie Blake Smith and overall team defense for keeping the Spartans close.
The team returns to action next Tuesday at Roxboro Community School.
