Raiders take down Red Rams in 5 innings
The Southern Vance bats have been hot so far this season and the Raiders continued the trend Wednesday, piling up 11 hits in an 11-1, five-inning win over Franklinton.
Kaylan Hoyle tossed a complete game for the Raiders, striking out 10 while allowing three hits.
Southern improved to 4-2. The two losses came against Heritage of Wake Forest and Northern Nash.
“If we come out here solid in the field, usually it’s going to be a good day because our hitting has been pretty good so far this year,” said Raider head coach Leann Harrell.
Kiyanna Kearney and freshman Brittany West each had three hits and two RBI for Southern Wednesday.
West played behind the plate Wednesday and has seen time at multiple positions so far this season.
“She’s been a great utility player already this season,” said Harrell. “She’s pitched, played first. She’s played third. She has caught this year. And had a pretty solid bat. She’s making our program stronger.”
West scored Allyson Dunn and Kiyanna Kearney in the second by driving the ball over the Red Ram center fielder.
Megan Hight, who finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, followed with a double up the middle to score West, making it 5-0.
“They’re seeing the ball,” said Harrell. “They have power. They’re pretty strong girls.”
Franklinton got a run across in the fourth by way of an illegal pitch, which advanced Brittany Coon home from third.
Southern ended the game in the fifth, by way of the 10-run rule, as Kearney scored on an error and Hoyle came home following a passed ball.
Next for the Raiders is the Greenville Conley Easter Tournament next Friday and Saturday. Southern will face New Bern Friday and Southwest Edgecombe and Havelock Saturday.
“We don’t want any easy games,” said Harrell. “Every game there will be a tough one we’re hoping. Hopefully it will get us better because there’s always room for improvement.”
