Webb's Hicks named Gatorade, District player of the year.
Isaiah Hicks has been named the Gatorade N.C. Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
The J.F. Webb senior led the Warriors to a 27-5 record and a N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state championship.
Averaging 22.9 points, 12.9 rebounds and 5.6 blocks per game, Hicks tallied 34 points, 30 rebounds and seven blocks in the 73-70 state title overtime win over Statesville.
The McDonald’s All-American and North Carolina recruit shot 58 percent from the field on the season and 41 percent from 3-point territory.
Hicks’ selection means the last five N.C. Gatorade boys players of the year have gone on to play on Tobacco Road. Hicks joins North Carolina’s Reggie Bullock (2009-10, Kinston), Duke’s Marshall Plumlee (2010-11, Christ School) and Ryan Kelly (2008-09, Ravenscroft), and N.C. State’s Rodney Purvis (2011-12, Upper Room Christian Academy).
Hicks was also recently named the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association District 6 Player of the Year.
Hicks was joined on the all-district first team by Person’s Tyrone Outlaw, Jr., Northern Durham’s Ricky Council, Durham Jordan’s Jared Hendryx, and Lamont Robinson of Eastern Alamance.
Chapel Hill’s Tod Morgan was coach of the year.
Webb’s Mitron Terry and Northern Vance’s Le’Darius Brandon were selected to the all-district third team.
No area players were selected to the all-district girls teams. Terri Rogers of Eastern Alamance was the player of the year and Tim Krotish, also of Eastern Alamance, was coach of the year.
